Most companies already have their next leader on payroll.
They just haven’t activated them yet.

We used to wait for people to “step up.”
Now we look for signs they’re already doing it—quietly.

Now, let’s get into the nuts and bolts.

Start with Soft Skills, Not Job Titles

Leadership isn’t about technical talent.

It’s about soft skills like:

  • Empathy (can they actually listen?)

  • Urgency (do they push things forward without being told?)

  • Humility (can they own mistakes?)

  • Financial IQ (do they understand how the business makes money?)

We use those traits as a filter when evaluating leadership potential—not just whether they’re a great field tech.

Qualification Happens Before Training

When we built our Emerging Leaders program, we didn’t just open it to everyone.

Each person is vetted based on:

  • Alignment with our core values

  • Peer nominations from existing leaders

  • Whether they’re already showing signs of leadership on the team

  • And most importantly: are they comfortable role-playing tough conversations?

If someone can step into role-play without freezing up, they’re probably ready for more.

We Train Weekly—and Reinforce Daily

We run two leadership programs every week:

  • One for emerging leaders preparing to step into management

  • One for current leaders sharpening their communication and decision-making

Every session follows the same structure:

  1. Core values on the screen

  2. Shoutouts tied to real behaviors

  3. One focused topic like “Crucial Conversations”

We keep the format dynamic—videos, discussion, breakout work—to make sure no one zones out halfway through.

We Built Culture to Surface Leaders

We don’t just talk about leadership. We operationalize it.

  • Our P&Ls and department goals are posted for everyone to see

  • Core values are repeated weekly, not just printed on a wall

  • Meeting rhythms are consistent across the company

  • Our team leads sessions during site visits, which reinforces what they’ve learned

When someone can teach it, they usually understand it better. That’s how we level up talent from within.
